Presented by Chitra Kalyanaraman, LES Chair High Tech Sector to Kannan Krishnaswami, PNNL, Senior Commercialization Manager

Why it won…

In a deal that will advance the next-generation AI-guided transmission electron microscope (AutoEM), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Japan Electron Optics Laboratory/Integrated Dynamic Electron Solutions (JEOL/IDES), a world leader in electron microscopy recently signed a licensing and co-development agreement to commercialize this application.

Together, they will introduce the platform’s core concept: using minimal or ‘sparse’ data analytics for image classification. It’s a significant step toward automating instruments. Technologies developed through this partnership will be enhanced and made accessible to research organizations and private companies. Accessing the platform will enable these experts to process microscopy data without requiring entirely new instrumentation hardware.

In accepting the award, Kannan Krishnaswami commented, “The artificial intelligence-guided transmission electron microscopy (AutoEM) reduces the time to discovery and analysis by three orders of magnitude. AutoEM can achieve in one hour what used to take a team of humans up to 1,000 hours. It is enabling transformative discoveries in clean energy, quantum computing, medicine, and manufacturing.”

Dan Masiel, Founder and CEO of JEOL-IDES stated, “ JEOL-IDES has enjoyed a collaborative relationship with our colleagues at PNNL for many years, and we were very excited when we became aware of the opportunity to license AutoEM.” He continues, “JEOL believes that technology has the potential to have a significant impact in the automation of electron microscopy. We are grateful to our colleagues at PNNL for the fruitful collaboration we’ve had through this licensing and R&D process. We look forward to the market introduction of the AutoEM technology.”
