Recently, Joe Casino was named the new LES Senior Vice-President of Standards. He took over from Matteo Sabbatini, who held the position for many years. With over 25 years in intellectual property law, Joe is set to be an important executive driving the LES mission to continue creating IP and licensing standards.

His appointment to the LES Management Council will position Joe to provide leadership of LES Standards and support the Society’s strategic plan. Joe’s experience as an attorney includes being head of the Intellectual Property Practice Group at Wiggin and Dana and Managing Director at Sun Patent Trust.

Joe noted that two important standards are completed: “Intellectual Capital in the Boardroom” and the “Management System for the Protection of IP in the Supply Chain.” These standards are designed to improve how intellectual property (IP) is managed and protected. Joe commented, “We also have several other standards under development.”

Standards under Development:

  1. IP Licensing: This standard will help streamline how parties interact when licensing intellectual property. It’s all about making the process smoother, building trust, and reducing the need for additional litigation or regulation in this field.
  2. IP Valuation: Currently in the public review stage, this standard offers a flexible approach for valuing IP in various situations. It provides different methods to ensure accurate and fair valuations.
  3. FRAND Licensing: This standard focuses on creating fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms for licensing essential patents. It aims to lower costs and simplify the management process for businesses and professionals.
  4. Intellectual Capital Management for Startups: Designed for early-stage companies, this standard aims to increase the value of startups during funding and exit stages. It also helps reduce IP risks and costs for those who adopt and practice it.
  5. IP Brokerage: This standard will set clear guidelines for agents, buyers, and sellers involved in IP transactions, making the process more efficient and transparent.

LES is always looking for new participants to join our committees and help shape these standards. Your input and expertise are essential!

Joe continued, “The LES Standards committees are a great opportunity to meet other members with similar interests while contributing to tools aimed at helping IP professionals and transactions. If you’re an LES member interested in getting involved, please reach out to me for more information.”
