TITLE
Licensing Industry Standards through Patent Pools, and Future Models for Licensing Molecular Diagnostics

DESCRIPTION
Industry standards provide the underlying basis for interoperability, low cost, and global technology adoption, fueling growth in mobile devices, computers, and consumer products.  Patent pools for industry standards are a cost-effective and efficient licensing mechanism for providing widespread access to technology covered by standards and owned by many parties. 

Mr. Geary will cover development of the first modern patent pool and subsequent patent pools created and licensed by MPEG LA, and discuss current issues in standards licensing. He also will discuss LibrassayTM, a licensing platform providing access to biotech patents in the field of molecular diagnostics.

SPEAKER BIO
Bill Geary
Bill Geary is Vice President of Business Development at MPEG LA, where he is responsible for identifying, organizing, and facilitating new patent pools for licensing by the company.  He has been involved in the formation and operation of patent pools in a wide variety of technologies for almost 15 years.

Before joining MPEG LA, Mr. Geary was General Patent Counsel in the Samsung Electronics Washington, DC office where he handled worldwide patent licensing and litigation for eleven years and negotiated hundreds of patent license agreements and directed dozens of litigations in the U.S. and overseas.

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Mr. Geary worked as an electrical engineer at Georgia Tech Research Institute and Harris Corporation.  He has degrees in law, electrical engineering, and an MBA.
